DIY Shampoo

I did it, it worked and it was so flippin easy

I don't know why I put it off for so long, maybe it was my dis-belief that the instructions I was reading really were that simple. But believe me, it took me 15 minutes to make 1 litre of fabulous shampoo, no chemicals or nasties and it works.


I made a few changes to the recipe, but here it is:
140gm Soap Base
850ml water
1/2 tsp pectin powder
3 - 6 drops of either cinnamon, chamomile or rosemary oil along with a few drops of pine. I didn't have these oils so just added a few drops of lemon to make it smell nice.




In a double boiler (glass bowl over a saucepan with boiling water) place 140gm grated soap
850mls water
1/2 tsp pectin

You simply let the soap melt, I found that I needed to give it a light stir so it didn't all sit on the bottom, but you don't want to stir too much otherwise it will lather up. When the soap has melted the liquid will be clear.




Once the grated soap was melted I added some of my own ingredients. I have used a shampoo from our local organic shop for about 2 years so just looked at the ingredients in this particular shampoo and added:

3 capsules Vitamin E - purchase these from the supermarket and just prick with a pin and squeeze the oil out. Should probably be more but I'm giving it ago anyway.

A couple of pinches of sea salt as persertative

I purchased a 1 litre dispenser from Payless Plastics. Cost about $10 from memory (I've had it for a few months)




I have roughly worked this out to cost about $5 for 1 litre to make. The shampoo I usually purchase is $11 for 250ml so that's a damn good savings in my book.

The original receipe is from www.sourceliving.co.nz. I get the soap base from here, this can be found on Trade Me. Oh and I love how they package their soaps for posting, they recycle phamplets, how cool is that!

They also recommend rinses to restore your hairs PH. I have yet to try this but will post the recipe when I have.

NOTE: If you are planning on making this and are currently using supermarket shampoo, please allow your hair a few weeks to get used to no chemicals :) I remember when I first changed over I was nearly put off, but now I never get an itchy scalp and my hair always feels clean.

Also it won't lather up and be all bubbles like supermarket shampoo. It took be a bit to get used to this, but I just reminded myself it was all the crap that made all those bubbles and I soon got over it.

Now I need to design some labels, just need to find some recycled paper first :)
